Paul Murdoch started training in martial arts in Goulburn, in the local judo and tae kwon do clubs. He has been teaching martial arts in Canberra and Queanbeyan for 21 years and is pleased to have established the independent club Zanshin Martial Arts.
Zanshin martial arts continues to offer a fantastic range of martial arts classes across the Canberra / Queanbeyan region, including some of the newer suburbs. New classes are starting up from the week starting 17 October that we encourage you to train at:

Franklin School, 135 Oodgeroo Avenue. New Tuesday evenings adults and kids classes with Sensei Mark . Kids classes from 6.30 pm and adults classes from 7.30 pm.
Wednesday evenings kids classes at Franklin will continue as normal Wednesdays at the same time and place with one of our exciting new instructors Sempai Chamath.
Zanshin Martial Arts training will continue as normal over the late September / early October school holidays. A great way for parents to give your children some active time.
Grading this September! The Zanshin Martial Arts grading is on the weekend of 17th and 18th September 2022.
How long do gradings go for? Junior gradings take approximately one hour per group. The senior gradings are in one block of about 3 hours, with a break in the middle for lower grades to get their results.
When should I show up? If you arrive 10 minutes before the nominated start time, that allows time for uniform checks, attendance marking, and for last-minute nerves to be taken care of. We have stocks of uniforms, t-shirts, kicking bags and plenty of other things available at the grading shop.

There are two venue changes for the Zanshin grading weekend on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 December 2021. Grading times remain the same.
– The Saturday grading originally scheduled for Ngunnawal is now at Rosary Primary School, Fleming Street, Watson.
– The Sunday grading originally scheduled for Conder is now at St Francis of Assisi Primary School, Casey Crescent, Calwell.
Venue changes are due to COVID impacting on the availability of the original venue hall hires. In the interests of Zanshin being able to deliver a COVID safe event at both venues, if you are unwell or showing COVID symptoms, please do not attend. We will be adhering to venue capacity limits. It will be necessary to stagger the belt groups in and out of each venue. That will mean staging belt groups who are yet to grade outside each venue until it is their turn to grade. Please ensure children bring runners to the grading to wear before they enter the grading hall.
Schools in the ACT are considered a high risk facility. Pursuant to ACT Health directions, in all indoor spaces at a school, including out of school hours, people aged 12 years and older are required to wear a mask at schools unless exempt from wearing a mask. Students who are grading can remove their mask during their grading.
We appreciate your cooperation in helping us to deliver a COVID safe grading weekend.
The Northside grading venue for Saturday 11 December 2021 is now Rosemary Primary School in Fleming Street Watson. It was Ngunnawal Primary School. This venue change was necessary due to restrictions of weekend external hall hires of ACT government schools. The Southside grading venue at Conder is unchanged. It’s exciting to give everyone the opportunity to grade again.
I trust you and your families are all coping okay during COVID. It is timely to provide you with an update on COVID’s impact on Zanshin Martial Arts for our NSW dojos. The NSW Government has outlined the NSW Roadmap to come out of COVID. It is a light at the end of the tunnel. The Roadmap is hopefully a positive path for our return to a post-COVID normal.
For Zanshin NSW dojos, at this stage there are two key dates when restrictions are expected to ease. At least one of the key dates is tied to COVID double-dose vaccination rates so, depending upon vaccination rates, the dates may change.
The first date for NSW dojos is the Monday after NSW reaches the 80% double-dose vaccination rate. That is when restrictions are expected to ease for activities including organised sport for fully vaccinated adults (16+ and those with medical exemptions) with all premises operating at 1 person per 4sqm indoors with limits on maximum numbers.
Currently, the area including Queanbeyan and our four NSW dojos is the subject of COVID Health Stay at Home Orders. When the Stay at Home Orders are lifted, and when NSW reaches the 80% double vaccination rate, and when Community Sport is permitted, we hope to re-open our NSW dojos.
From 1 December further changes will be introduced including all venues moving to the 2sqm rule and masks not required indoors. Unvaccinated people will have greater freedoms. COVID safety requirements will apply. The full return to post-COVID normal is staged and will be in accordance with NSW Government requirements for our NSW dojos. I will keep you informed as we move closer to a return to Zanshin training.

I am really looking forward to the NSW COVID Roadmap ahead and resuming the fantastic training we share together. Please stay healthy and look after each other.
